Local Plan Production
…"We are very happy to recommend Global Mapping to other local authorities.”

Global Mapping produce local plans with MAPublisher then give you everything back including a copy of MAPublisher so that you are self sufficient for the future. Wychavon District Council hold their data in MapInfo and couldn’t get it out into a presentable form. MAPublisher accessed their MapInfo tables, brought over the OS data for the base maps (including text via a routine written by ourselves) to produce print ready files which then went to print. At the end of the project, Wychavon received back their printed copies, the map files and a copy of MAPublisher.
Martin Tout, Planning Technician at Wychavon said “Despite having a very tight deadline, Global Mapping's technical ability and friendliness helped us produce an excellent set of full colour local plan town inset maps and proposals map. We are very happy to recommend Global Mapping to other local authorities”
Barbara Rayment at the London Borough of Ealing was equally pleased and kindly sent us the following comment:
“Ealing needed its UDP policy map produced from around 30 MapInfo tabs, many of which overlapped and were therefore very difficult to display clearly direct from MapInfo. In mid-September we saw and were impressed by a demo of Global Mapping's cartographic capability at GeoSolutions 2002, less than a month before the publication deadline. Alan Smith assured us that he could deliver on time and to our budget, and within two weeks we had proofs, which as ever gave rise to amendments which he coped with calmly and efficiently. The printed maps were delivered to the document publishers on schedule, and we distributed on time. We were delighted not only with the speed of production but also the clarity of the maps, and are hoping to use the software in future projects.”
Cheers, Barbara
Local Plans / LDF on the Internet
LATEST NEWS - Bluefox Technology (formerly The Lead Partnership) and JDi Solutions gave a joint presentation to the North Wales Planning Officers Group demonstrating their respective systems for publishing interactive LDF maps and documents and for e-consultation. On the back of this,Conwy County Council has licensed both the CMS and JDi's Solutions e-consultation system in support of their LDP programme. The Document Management component of the CMS exports documents directly into JDi's e-consultation system while 2 way links can be set up between the interactive map viewer and JDi's public consultation system. If you would be interested in a similar presentation contact Alan Smith on 01280 840770
We are also working in conjunction with JDi Solutions for Suffolk County Council on the Minerals and Waste Development Framework of their LDF. In October last year JDi's e-consultation software helped South Cambridgeshire DC to become the first Local Authority in the country to have their LDF Core Strategy passed by the inspectors. Click here for more info.
West Oxfordshire District Council is extending its use of the CMS by contracting us to build a Site Submissions website. With content uploaded via the CMS the website will allow the public to view where submissions have been submitted and for what development purpose. As with their Local Plan website the interactive map viewer will allow address and settlement searching.
Slough are extending their UDP website CMS to incorporate an interactive tourism site focussing on footpaths and cycleways.
Global Mapping, in conjunction with Bluefox Technology, has won Foundation Accreditation with The Planning Portal for its Content Management System for LDF. We are actively working with our clients and the Portal to gain for full accreditation.
The following sites will give you online demonstrations of just how flexible our sites are;

As with all our recent sites, you can select which policies to view and by clicking on the map find out which policies affect that particular point, irrespective of whether all policies are switched on or not!
This website was originally ported to our own Content Management System from MapXtreme, as this offered greater flexibility in linking between the maps and the written documentation. It was more recently moved across to our new CMS. To accommodate transitional arrangements between their Local Plan and LDF and to show the public which policies have been saved and which have been deleted, Dover approached us to adapt their Local Plan. As part of the adaptation planning staff at Dover used the CMS to amend the Written Statement to highlight which policies were no longer valid.

LDF
The Council's Planning Policy Team uses Limehouse Software for preparing and publishing their LDF policy documents on the Internet. The policy documents only outline the Council's Preferred Options in words which is why a Proposals Map is also published. Rather than simply rely on static images or paper maps the Council has taken full advantage of using the Internet by publishing an interactive Proposals Map that provides significant benefits and time-savings to anyone who wants to participate in the consultation process online. Hyperlinks work between the text and maps meaning that members of the public can link from the Proposals Map to the relevant section of the policy document and vice-versa simply by pointing their cursor and clicking their left mouse button. The two-way linking process is fundamental to the interactive process as it fulfils a key functional component of Band 2 of the PDG e-Planning Criteria for 2007/08. These criteria are used to assess the allocation of Planning Delivery Grants, an important source of income for proactive Councils like Sheffield who are committed to the e-Planning process.
This year Sheffield City Council have introduced a new Online Consultation System for their new planning development documents, the Local Development Framework. The text documents are hosted by Limehouse Software and the Proposals Map is hosted by Global Mapping.
Limehouse software provides an option to produce links to and from documents. Global Mapping took responsibility for making these links live. The implementation by Global Mapping was both quick and uncomplicated. The result is a reliable online map with a fast and intuitive user interface.
Being able to link from a text document and illustrate a specific site on a map has been useful. However our Consultees have been most impressed by the ability to select a location on a map, identify the relevant policies for that location and then follow a link directly to the policy text.

Users can view the electronic version of the proposals map accompanying the newly adopted unitary development plan (2006). The online proposals map is presented as a single map covering the whole borough and is interactively linked to relevant policies. Users can access a list of relevant policies and designations for an individual site by double-clicking on that area on the proposals map. The map links to the relevant development plan text through a ‘pop-up’ window, which lists the relevant policy reference and policy text. The user is able to identify street names and/or locate an individual site on the map, via Postcode and/or street name search, or by magnifying the map (zoom in/out functionality).

This Local Plan site incorporates the latest functionality included with our CMS. This includes a sliding zoom bar allowing you to view at an infinite number of scales, or + and - buttons to jump to predefined scales. The arrow buttons allow you to pan around or if you prefer you can click and drag for panning. At all times the scale you are viewing appears in the bottom left hand corner of the map and in the top left hand corner is a scale bar in both kms and miles.
I'm very impressed with interactive Website version of the Local Plan. It has met or surpassed all my expectations. Colleagues I have demonstrated it to are eager to use it as their everyday working document in preference to the paper version. The speed, ease of use and the facility to target specific locations and applicable policies are the most successful qualities of the site. Our working relationship has been first class and professional, with all my queries being attended satisfactorily.

Local Plan This site has been designed with LDF requirements in mind. The need to show revised maps at each publishing stage could be very expensive if maps have to be remade each time. This approach just allows for a new policy to be added with minimum fuss and therefore minimum cost. A technical review of the site is available to read here.
We can now deliver a truly interactive mapping system that will allow the display of your GIS data in a standard web browser. There are no plug-ins to download and no expensive server software overhead.
The base data is edited to suit the viewing scale, and a table under the map tells you what policies apply to a particular area.
Alnwick District Wide Local Plan now available online
Local Plan Alnwick District Council have made the Local Plan for the District, first published in 1997, available online. This has only recently become possible when the map element of the Local Plan was “digitised” and made accessible via a Geographic Information System (GIS). This fully interactive site allows you to interrogate the mapping, find out which policies apply to a particular area and then click through to read about them. This latest version for Alnwick also includes the option to view their LDF.

Data Capture The system can be used for displaying just about any type of GIS data. Footpaths, road maintenance schedules - if you need to tell the public about what is going on in your area then this could be the answer.
Planning policies, highways information, BLPUs and historical land use are just some of the areas that if captured accurately and supplied in the appropriate format for your GIS would make your life that much more efficient. We have experienced operators with a wealth of practical experience in the public sector, working to stringent quality procedures to ensure that you get back the data you are expecting. As part of the pre-production process a delivery schedule will be agreed designed to cause you the minimum of disruption whilst documents are in our possession. We have a flexible approach to working on or off site and in cases where you are unable to release documents under any circumstances, then we would be happy for our staff to operate from your premises or to advise you of an alternative solution such as working from scanned images.
Global Mappings Consultancy Service offers the independence to provide you with the most effective solution on GIS selection, pre and post implementation advice and planning ongoing project management.
Our extensive knowledge of most GIS products allows us to transfer your data with minimum disruption. You can supply your data in any common GIS format and it will be transferred utilizing both existing transfer protocols and bespoke solutions.
Large Format Scanning
Do you need your old paper records to be easily accessed on your GIS or archived for security purposes providing cover against damage from wear and tear and accidental disposal? If yes, then Global Mapping offers a large format scanning service based around the Colortrac 360Gx+ scanner, which is capable of handling most sizes from A5 upwards, the only restrictions being a maximum width of 1 metre and file size. Documents can be scanned in binary, Greyscale, indexed colour and RGB, at resolutions up to a maximum of 600dpi.
As the scanner is not a drum scanner it enables us to scan delicate and precious items with no risk of damage. Output is normally to CD but we also offer the option of writing the data to your own supplied hard drive if you wish.
Images can be tiled and geo-referenced to your requirements and output in a format compatible with your GIS. As an example, Local Authorities have used this facility to import historical mapping to their GIS to help fulfill their Contaminated Lands Strategy.
Large format scanning and geo-referencing solutions can be offered to mapping producers, publishers, oil exploration companies, the architectural field, utilities, government agencies and local authorities and for GPS.
Data Conversion
Global Mapping can become your outsource resource for Geospatial and IT services. MAPublisher - Bridging the gap between GIS and Desktop Publishing
Do you have problems creating quality maps from your GIS? Do you have to call in experts to produce the finished maps for you? MAPublisher (from Avenza Systems of Canada) will help you resolve your problems. Working within Macromedia FreeHand or Adobe Illustrator (on Mac or PC), it lets you effortlessly import your GIS data from, say, ArcView or MapInfo. Furthermore, it retains your GIS map attributes and co-ordinates so you can continue to use GIS queries, view and edit your attributes, or change projections or scales.
Once you are in a DTP environment, you will obviously have full control over fonts and specification enabling you to style up your map exactly as you want it. For example, if you were a planner with all your policy data on your GIS you would now have the ability to produce the maps yourself and output to Postscript ready for colour printing and when you have finished you can convert your Postscript files back to your GIS system!
MAPublisher is a complete suite of cartographic and GIS tools for your vector graphics programme. Make high quality professional maps while maintaining your GIS functionality. MAPublisher combines the best features of a graphics programme with the core elements of a GIS application to create a cost effective yet powerful cartographic solution. This unique blend of graphics and GIS allows for a shorter learning curve than found with most GIS packages so that you can get up and running and begin producing quality results quickly and cost effectively. MAPublisher can be integrated into geography, cartography or GIS workflows at most levels.
"I’d heard of MAPublisher but wasn’t aware of just how good it was until Tim (Rideout) gave me a demo. Straight away I could see the possibilities, it’s very impressive." Alan Smith, MD, Global Mapping
"MAPublisher has definitely improved my cartographic and GIS ability" Robert Chaney, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, USA
"Training was worthwhile" Phil Sherbourne, Bristol City Council
"I wouldn’t be able to work without it" Gillian Bradley Derbyshire Dales District Council
"Overall, very pleased with MapPublisher" Anita Walker, South Gloucestershire District Council

High quality seamless digital aerial photography is now available for the whole of the UK. Flown by GetMapping - the leading UK specialists in survey quality orthophotos. The photography is geo-referenced making it easy to import into your GIS and merge with your mapping datasets. Images are ideal for planning and land management, local authority facilities management, illustrated books and other publications.
Ultra-High Resolution photography is also available at an amazing 10cm resolution - enough to pick out pedestrians and the colour of their jackets! |

This stunning image of Snowdonia has been created by building a digital terrain model and then taking Getmapping’s high resolution imagery from the Snowdon SkyView posters and draping them over the model. Having done this the model can be rotated to give views from different angles and perspectives. The images look like oblique aerial photographs when viewed for the first time, but the visual quality belies the fact that they are 2D data and are therefore spatially correct. This allows other mapped detail i.e. data from a GIS, to be portrayed as part of the 3D image and can therefore enhance the delivery of information where height and landform are important elements.

Global Mapping and its partners have developed the techniques required to produce these 3D landscape images which could be replicated wherever height data and imagery exist. Several programs are used to build the images that can be readily supplied for litho printing or web delivery. For more information contact Alan Smith on 01280 840770.
