ARCHAEO-SCHOOLS JOINS WITH MAGDALEN COLLEGE SCHOOL TO CREATE A NEW
COMMUNITY HERITAGE ACTIVITY CENTRE
FOR BRACKLEY
Following the success of a recent heritage and archaeology volunteer project involving students at the school, permission has been granted for Archaeo-schools to develop a much-needed facility to celebrate the heritage of the school and Brackley town. A focus group representing five areas of the community will work with Archaeo-schools to ensure that we offer something for everybody. Activities will include community courses with a heritage and archaeological focus; outreach packages for schools, colleges and community groups, and enhancement activities to extend an existing school’s curriculum.
Within five years, this project aims to provide Brackley with a centre for heritage that can be used and enjoyed by all. Plans include securing funds to develop a permanent heritage display, an archive store and study facility and an exhibition space for local artists and much more. Magdalen College School has been at the heart of Brackley since 1548 and is the obvious location for this exciting new community venture. We believe that each person is a stakeholder in our local heritage and aim to ensure that we offer something for everyone.
If you would like to donate your time, energy, expertise, experience, skills and/or funds to support your local Community Heritage Activity Centre (CHAC) or would like further information about courses and activities, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Tiffany Brownell:

BIG BRACKLEY GARAGE SALE
SATURDAY 28TH APRIL 2012
10am - 4pm
The Churches in Brackley are arranging a 'Big Brackley Garage Sale' for Christian Aid (the proceeds will be going to a project bringing clean water and agriculture training to some villages in Sierra Leone). The idea is that you set up a market stall / table outside your garage, or inside if its cold or wet. You can sell all the things you meant to 'car boot' but never got round to, and any home made things, plants etc. You can use this to raise money for you or for your own good cause, or charity. The sale will work best if you can get your neighbours to join in too; the more stalls there are in an area, the more people will come and buy. You register your sale with us for £5 and we produce a map with all the sales around Brackley. We will be selling maps for £1 on the morning of Saturday 28th April. We also undertake to promote the event all around the area, in the papers, on radio and online.
More information and details of how to register will be coming in the next couple of weeks. Watch this site, and the local Facebook pages.
Nordic Walking
This spring, Brackley Library and the Sports Development team at South Northamptonshire Council are working together to put on two Nordic walking courses in the town.
On Saturday 3rd March there is a Taster course for those who wish to have a go at Nordic walking and this costs just £5, which is redeemable if you enrol on a 'Learn to' course. A 'Learn to Nordic Walk' course, specifically aimed at the complete beginner to the Nordic walking technique, starts on Saturday 10th March. This consists of four one-hour sessions and costs £25 per person.
Both courses are taught by qualified NWUK instructors and the poles are supplied. There is tea & coffee available in the Library afterwards and people can join one of our free community Nordic walking groups.
Details are:
Brackley - Taster
Location: Brackley Library
Date: Saturday 3rd March 2012
Time: 10:00am - 10:45am

Climbing in Africa – for Africa
A Brackley Rotarian is undertaking a daunting climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro
Having bicycled from London to Paris for charity last year, Irene Childerley has now set her fundraising target much higher – 5,895 metres high...
Sponsorship of Brackley Rotarian Irene’s tough six-night trek is for the Brackley based ‘Friends of Mithulini Village’ charitable project, raising funds to provide clean drinking water for the village located in the Eastern Province of Kenya.
Towering over the sandy plains of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and Irene is scheduled to be at its 5,895m snow-capped peak on 2 February.
Irene said: “Brackley Rotary Club supports the Mithulini project and we have a target of £6,000 to fund the boring of a well and provide related equipment.”
“The endeavour of the Nyali family in Brackley who founded ‘Friends of Mithulini Village’ has motivated me to make this trek. Villagers in Mithulini have a one and a half hour walk to and from a river, with water being transported in containers carried by donkeys or people.”
”My Kilimanjaro route is less used than other routes, covering many terrains – rich forest, moorland, a volcanic crater, snow, glaciers and a lunar landscape with an ash cone. This camping-based trek has the danger of altitude sickness so the route has been carefully planned to maximize my chance of reaching the summit.”
“Sponsorship would be most welcome and can easily be given on-line at www.justgiving.com/Irene-Kilimanjaro or www.justgiving.com/Mithuluni with the added benefit of Gift Aid. All sponsorship will go to Mithulini – the cost of the trek being paid personally.”
Darren Longs 4444 Challenge

4 Marathons in 4 weeks each in an average of 4 hours & raising (hopefully) £4,444..........
www.virginlondonmarathon.com www.miltonkeynesmarathon.co.uk
www.brightonmarathon.co.uk www.connemarathon.com
Whilst I am a veteran of 9 marathons & 2 Ultra Marathons this will, without doubt, be my toughest challenge to date. The chosen charity, CHILDREN WITH CANCER, is a massively worthwhile cause & the UK’s most significant charity focusing exclusively on the fight against cancer in infants & children. the charity funds life-saving research into the causes, prevention and treatment of childhood leukemia and other childhood cancers, and work to protect young lives through essential welfare and campaigning programs.
With any luck my efforts will capture the imagination of the local populace and together we will reach our fundraising target of £4,444.
As a member of the Brackley & District Running Club (you must have seen us out and about in numbers all clad in hi viz treading the streets of Brackley & beyond on a Tuesday & a Thursday night) I will have no shortage of buddies to help me train towards my goal.
Many of these guys are marathon runners themselves and will also be running Spring marathons such as London & the inaugural Milton Keynes 26.2 mile event…so there should be no shortage of company as I grind out up to 60 training miles per week
The simplest way for people to donate is via my Just Giving page - https://www.justgiving.com/dazzaspowerof4challenge/new any & all donations are welcome, be it £0.40, £4, £40 or £400 :-)
BRACKLEY WALKING AND CYCLING GUIDE
Residents living in Brackley and have contributed to a new walking guide being published by local map company Global Mapping. Earlier this year they were asked to submit their favourite walking route and from the responses 12 walks have been collated and appear in a new Walking Guide. Included are walks to and from Brackley to neighbouring villages Turweston, Whitfield, Radstone and Hinton in the Hedges as well as walks starting outside Brackley taking in Syresham, Farthinghoe, Tusmore and Stowe Parkland. Cyclists have not been forgotten and 6 suggested routes radiating out from Brackley are included.
The Guide is available from the Brackley Information Bureau in the Courtyard Mews, Library, Old Hall Bookshop and Courtyard Coffeehouse and although it’s free donations for the Brackley & District Wildlife Society would be appreciated. The paintings used in the guide are also on display and are available to buy with all profits again going to the Wildlife Trust.
Over £400 has been raised so far-thank you
There is an accompanying website http://www.globalmapping.uk.com/brackley/brackley_walks.htm where all the walks can be downloaded.
