STOWE HOUSE
A visitor attraction since the 18th century, Stowe House and Landscape Gardens form one of the greatest and most imitated estates in Europe and have welcomed many literary, political and influential people as well as royals from around Europe.
Stowe House is a major work of architecture on an immense and palatial scale which has inspired, and contains the work of, a number of leading 18th century designers including Vanbrugh, Adam, Gibbs, Kent and Soane.
Saved from certain destruction by the foundation of Stowe School, the House and Grounds have been in continual use since 1923. The Landscape Gardens were given to the National Trust with an endowment in 1989 in order that they could restore the forty listed monuments and temples and increase access for the public. In 2000, with the same aim, Stowe House Preservation Trust began the restoration of the Grade I listed House, inspiring the thousands of visitors. No major restoration or renovations had been carried out at Stowe since the 1860s up until this point.
Stowe House is open throughout the year. During term time the house is only open for a 2pm tour, some or all of the State Rooms will be included.
